The Racket was a difficult birth and unfortunately it shows. Cromwell had starred in the 1927 stage version of this film and was a good choice to direct the film adaptation. The first film adaptation was in 1928. But about the end of the film, Cromwell also ends up on the black McCarthy list. Nicolas Ray has shot a number of scenes for a disgruntled studio boss Howard Hughes.

The story has enough ingredients to be very strong. A pessimistic film about a thoroughly corrupt police force with good actors like Mitchum, Ryan and Scott. But the film is flat and lacks energy and atmosphere. There are also too many scenes indoors and not enough is done with them. The film therefore lacks dynamism. I don't know if the Cromwell fuss caused that, but it won't have helped. Especially a pity about the role of Ryan who is really unpleasant at times.
