Very charming melodrama. Despite the fact that the film occasionally stands still in terms of story, it is worth seeing this old film, if only for the beautiful Old Dutch intertitles. The score by Henny Vrienten was also pleasant!

Saw a large part (missed the beginning), and watched with admiration.

It's amazing that you can convey a message without talking, I always wondered if current actors could do this too.

Story not really exciting...and the quality was also quite poor. I knew it was a restored film, but some parts were really just yellow spots! So apparently they couldn't save everything.

It is nice that this work has been saved, even though some parts are damaged beyond repair. The story is romantic and predictable, but still entertaining, thanks to the actors and the variety of decors.

Gloria Swanson could convey a range of emotions with her facial expressions. "We had faces!" she would say twenty-eight years later. She plays the ingénue, the damsel in distress, who must choose between duty and passion. Big hats and jewelry, dark lipstick and a curl give her a fashionable look.

Rudolph Valentino was the Adonis of the time. He plays the romantic hero, who happens to be around when her life is in danger. He wears a neat suit with a pocket square, a gold watch chain, a cigarette holder and pomaded hair.

It starts in England, but travels abroad provide variety. There is a beautiful montage during mountain climbing, a fantasy scene during the wig period in Versailles and a climax in the desert. There are color filters and added sound effects, such as the wind. The music by Henny Vrienten alternates between waltzes, ragtime, sad strings and solemn winds.
