In post-war Germany, the Allies take care of the survivors of the concentration camps. Among them are many children who are separated from their parents and who come from all corners of Europe. The nine-year-old Czech boy Karel Malik flees from such a reception center. An American soldier takes care of the boy, who remembers little about his past.
