I only knew Sweeney Todd through the Tim Burton movie with Johnny Depp. I was delighted to see that the 1936 original is now available on Netflix.
With not too high expectations but with good will I started this and at times I enjoyed it quite a bit. This Sweeney Todd is seriously worn and quite theatrical, but I can imagine that it was enjoyed with great pleasure in the 1930s. I found the revolving chair especially spectacular for the time and reminded me a bit of the work of Buster Keaton.
In terms of content, the first half hour was entertaining, but after that it becomes a repetition exercise and the charm of the film diminishes slightly. Certainly not a great film, but creative and original enough to later inspire others to make much nicer and better films.
As said for the enthusiast, it can now be seen on Netflix.
Nice to have seen once but no more than that.

Not good.
Dated crime film. At the time it may have been sold as "horror", but time has really caught up with that. It remains a somewhat clumsy film, in which a strange hairdresser gets up to all sorts of things and can laugh heartily about it himself. The version by Tim Burton was the only one I knew until recently and it is still a lot better than this attempt.
