oh dear.

I think I missed the score of this movie, just looked to see some of Craven again. The result just hurts the eyes. And ears for that matter.

The vampire thing in Brooklyn, it's not a very good combination. There's still some funny black sitcom actor spotting in the first five minutes, but once that's done there's little left except an insufferable Murphy, an idiotic plot, failed humor and a total lack of atmosphere.

The humor really didn't work at all. Bad effects, lame gore and above all a lot of busy chatter. Too bad it's not funny anywhere. In the end, the film doesn't last very long, but after half an hour I was already biting my lip. Craven is just a weird little guy. Has a decent film in his hands, but also regularly delivers really bad products.

0.5*

This film looks nice, but unfortunately it doesn't score enough to give it a pass.

Act resistance is doable, but the rest is a bit of a bland intention.

It is striking that Wes Craven has made a horror comedy here whose humor is horrific, but the horror is hilarious. It makes Vampire in Brooklyn work as a clumsy camp sometimes, if for all the wrong reasons. On the one hand it is a film that seems to want to take the mysterious main character of Eddie Murphy seriously, but at the same time Eddie Murphy also does what Eddie Murphy always did during that period; climb into outfits to play weird characters. While this was already annoying in a comedy, in a horror film it is completely distracting. But the problem remains the same; Eddie Murphy as all kinds of characters is simply not funny.

Actually, he's funnier as Maximilian, the arrogant mystic vampire, than when he's walking around as a priest or a wimpy thief. But that's also because everything surrounding Maximilian and his obsession with Angela Bassett seems to be taken very seriously by Craven and his associates. So every time there has been another piece of slapstick - with mostly screaming humor from Kadeem Hardison and John Witherspoon (who obviously have the most fun in the film) - Craven hits the brakes again and everything gets dead serious. The film switches from Kadeem Hardison who loses an arm in a comical way to a very boring piece of drama with Allen Payne as one of the most boring licorices in film history. You could almost get whiplash from it. But it's that huge tone-deafness of Vampire in Brooklyn that secretly makes it somewhat amusing.

2 stars.
