Instinct plot
"Nothing is more savage than civilization."
Anthropologist Ethan Powell studies monkeys in Africa when he goes missing for two years. When he is found he kills 3 people. Psychologist Theo Calder takes on the task of helping Dr. To get Powell to talk again, so as to enable him to face trial for his actions.

The film is somewhat like Silence of the Lambs, but less intense. A psychopath is locked up in 'Harmony Bay' and there is a psychologist who wants the man to talk, to help him (consciously) attend his own trial. Naive and good-hearted, this psychologist does his best to help the haggard Dr. Powell to help. It is not easy, because the man is very unpredictable and aggressive, but quite intelligent.
Good actors, especially Anthony Hopkins, I thought very well portrayed, but Cuba Gooding also did well, albeit with his well-known calm, serious playing.
Excellent images, unfortunately a safe all-round score and this causes a sentimental atmosphere later in the film, which is also reinforced thanks to the further development in the story. Without all the sentiment, this movie would have scored higher with me.

I don't think Instinct is exactly a masterpiece, but thanks to the acting performances of Cuba Gooding Jr., Donald Sutherland and Anthony Hopkins, the level does go up considerably. Also nice supporting roles from Paul Gates, who we still know from coming to America, and George Dzundza who played in the Law & Order series for a long time. The story itself is well thought out, and the director manages to let you mentally go along with the film. Nice movie, I can only comment that it is quite long.

I really like the story and philosophy behind the film and it really appeals to me. How we as humans have created such a terrible world under the guise of "civilization". I can stand behind that and those thoughts come to my mind almost daily when I see the news again or look around me. But then I also feel powerless every time because I can't change anything. The only thing I can do to keep from getting too depressed is to plan and make ideas for myself to make the best of it while I'm still alive. There is also good acting in the film. Enough for a good movie. But on the other hand, this film also causes a lot of irritation. Why does it all have to be so American and so bombastic again and is everything aimed at cheap profit in this film with especially high viewing figures. The necessary violence and a tear to score well. That undermines the entire philosophy of the film and makes the maker completely unbelievable if he were to say that he has a message with this film. So in terms of film he would get a 3.5 from me, but with this approach I don't want to give more than 3. The average of 3.23 that the film is now on is a figure that I can live with very well.
