Superb film noir. The femme fatale was not made much more fatal than Rita Hayworth in the 1940s. The first hour of the film, in particular, is a pleasure to enjoy the joust between Hayworth and Glenn Ford. The latter may lend his voice to the voice-over who comments on the drama. Back to Rita Hayworth. She looks - certainly in artistically lit black and white - quite divine, which is a bonus for a femme fatale, and when she opens her mouth, it is not wrong either. It can be said that her two songs were sung by Anita Ellis, but it comes across very natural. Ellis has lent her voice after all from what is for me the highlight of the film: Hayworth's extremely sensual performance of 'Put The Blame on Mame' for the casino audience, where she gloves off as if it were something else. Yes, again proof that the censorship at the time could push the sensual creativity of the filmmakers to great heights. We have left that censorship behind us, which besides a positive side also has a downside (although I don't want to be the advocate of censorship ).

Everything I expect from a film noir is here. A tight scenario with a good line of crime, ambiguous figures that would have a psychiatrist's hands full with, a few sensual moments, beautiful lighting (Rudolph Maté) and excellent directing, and above all shrewd dialogues.

It took me a while to really get involved in the movie. It's not very special and some plot lines are a bit sloppy. But it turned out to be a fun movie along the way. Especially when the beautiful Rita Hayworth comes into the picture and doesn't lose the viewer. It's actually pretty amazing how she manages to turn this simple story into something beautiful and how she makes her character fascinating. Hayworth was not only a beautiful actress, but also an amazing dancer. In Gilda, the dance is not that special in terms of choreography, but it already feels real. Natural and sensual, without coming across as an act. Even if she sings a song with the guitar. Many contemporaries turn such a musical scene into an orchestrated act that may be clever, but you don't believe that the character then spontaneously feels like singing or dancing.

Gilda is a feel-good noir that is better than expected and still lingers afterwards. Nice to see.

I'm having some trouble making Gilda a masterpiece. The plot was decidedly sparse and mainly an excuse for the Johnny and Gilda show in which hate and love alternate, spiced up by strong dialogue.

Hayworth certainly goes around the edges of the Hays code in the 1940s and is as provocative and sensual as ever and Ford also had a nice career playing similar types which Gilda was an iconic success. Hayworth is also allowed to show her specialty, dancing. It is those two and their mutual dialogues that carry the film and really nothing else. The film loses some energy in the last half hour. But the sides of the movie that are good are also very good.
