Yapian Zhanzheng plot

In 1838, the Chinese empire is threatened by opium, imported by the British. Emperor Daoguang sends Lin Zexu to Canton to outlaw the drug and end corruption among customs officials. He also has tons of opium thrown into the sea and restricts the freedom of movement of the foreign 'devils.' Reason enough for the British government to launch a war with China. This war ended badly for China, partly because Hong Kong had to be ceded.
