Fantasy may be Tim Burton's specialty, but it's been a while since Big Fish made something beautiful in that genre. Furthermore, it is especially the animations such as Frankenweenie and Corpse Bride that were worth seeing. Other films mainly have to save the furniture with a strong story, but lack the charm of really good fantasy. And the beautiful worlds of Burton in the 80s and 90s are also behind us.

I didn't know the story of Miss Peregrine's home. It's clearly a children's movie and the story is definitely fun. I can imagine that younger viewers (or readers) will certainly enjoy this. The protagonist is not very interesting and I notice a lot of forced acting in many other characters. miscast? Bad actor direction? Samuel L. Jackson has been doing the same for years, but with names like Eva Green and Judi Dench you should expect more. The young Ella Purnell stands out the most.

The setting is beautiful, although the decoration could have been better. This is the same cinematographer as Amélie Poulain and Inside Llewyn Davis. Then it could be a bit more.

This film was still fun to watch and perhaps more enjoyable for children. It is certainly not a top film. Everything runs too much without fantasy for that.

Still a beautiful and interesting film even when revised.

Once you pay attention to it, movies with action always have to have a big fight on 75% of the movie, including this one. For me it was superfluous, and it lowers the total experience and therefore appreciation.

Therefore 'only' one:

3.5*

(Can someone make an alternative cut so I can just give the 4 this movie deserves? )

The first hour is Burton at a high level. Mysterious story, beautiful visual setting/images and a great Burtonesk atmosphere. The school looks very nice, and the lavish CGI hardly bothers as it is used quite well. After this fine hour, however, the level drops, and especially as soon as the character of Samuel L. Jackson appears, the film turns into a very formulaic and uninspired work, which tries to be forced epic and funny. Normally Jackson is always a plus, but here he really doesn't shine. The great Eva Green is also completely pushed aside after that first hour, too bad. What's left are some generic action scenes at the end, and a ending that you can see coming. In brief; nice fantasy film by Burton with a promising and good first hour, but after that he unfortunately can't quite maintain that level. 3*.
