Henri Verneuil adapted yet another novel by Georges Simenon into a film and Jean Gabin once again displays his charismatic talent as an orator in a film that blasts politicians and their involvement and personal interests in branches of industry, banking, etc.

A solid film especially from the cold political landscape.

A lot of talent contributed to this film in terms of actors, direction and music. And it's based on work by Georges Simenon, which I really appreciate. And yet it only interested me moderately. A fictional political story with little or no interaction on a personal level. Lots of talk. A lot of talking. Locations that are often limited to the seating area or the walking path. Gabin's speech towards the end briefly stokes the fire until it quickly goes out. It's all delivered skillfully, but it doesn't resonate with me. By the way, contrary to the label here and on other sites, this is anything but a thriller. It's political drama.
