Between 1953 and 1969, Gilles Grangier made no fewer than 12 films with Jean Gabin, including this "Maigret voit Rouge," a classic crime film from that era, based on the work of Simenon.

Jean Gabin is, of course, Maigret, where this time not everything goes smoothly, but still.

A huge number of characters – and the police force was also ludicrously well-cast – a good structure and storytelling style, with action scenes that are no longer of this cinematic era.

No real female co-stars – Françoise Fabian barely appears – but a notable figure is Michel Constantin, who plays the role of an American gangster and actually speaks American English. A bit funny. Additionally, there are several actors who loved appearing in crime movies.

Classic, enjoyable, a solid 3.5.

The Maigret films with Gabin are very good. His calm and controlled manner of handling matters points to expertise spanning many decades. He is the "man in charge" and knows down to the last detail how to take down criminals. Not a whodunnit, unlike the other two Maigret films, but a laborious hunt for American gangsters who go into hiding after an attempted murder, and simultaneously a search for the victim of that attempt, who is kidnapped immediately afterwards. Another delightful role from Gabin; I never tire of this actor. The resolution leaves no room for doubt or interpretation. Beautifully executed.
