One word: wow! Hangover Square is the third film by director John Brahm that I have watched, after The Lodger and Guest In The House, and this one is the most impressive. Visually, this film is a gothic party, with Brahm assisted by cinematographer Joseph LaShelle (Oscar winner for the classic Laura the year before). The film is based on the novella, which I don't know, but in itself I thought it was a good script, very straightforward, and certainly not complicated or 'surprising'. As far as the lack of that last aspect is concerned, the film must rely on (successful) atmosphere creation.

Within the framework created by Brahm, good performances are delivered by the protagonists Laird Cregar, Linda Darnell and George Sanders. During filming there were reportedly numerous conflicts between Cregar and Brahm, who at the end of the shooting made it clear to each other that they never wanted to work together again. Unfortunately, Laid Cregar would not even see the premiere of the film after his untimely death, which has already been reported here on the forum.

Last but not least, all praise goes to composer Bernard Herrmann - personal favorite - who brilliantly designed the score for this film. I definitely want to rewatch the film for its music alone. What I like so much about Herrmann is the fact that he really creates music with character, and by that I don't mean the interchangeable slop that contemporary composers seem to be guilty of (to my ears). The music in this film is very prominent, which makes sense, since Laid Cregar plays the role of composer. The highlight is undoubtedly the finale of the film, with Cregar's 'ghostwritten' symphony in performance, which you have to see and hear to believe.

Strong film.

This was surprisingly fun. Sanders is always cool, Darnell is always seductive, but the hero here is Laird Cregar, who convincingly portrays the tormented protagonist. Too bad we will never know what else he could have achieved in his career, I think he would have gone far. In addition to the strong leading role, the beautiful music in this film also plays an important role, culminating in the epic and memorable final scene.

Beautiful black and white camera images and a strong Laird Cregar in a gothic thriller, Darnell as a mean profiteer provides the femme fatale input.

Initially I thought I was dealing with a British film, but that is not true.
