Danny Haley leads a group of con men who make businessman Arthur Winant lose in manipulated poker. The money he had bet had been borrowed. Winant sees death as the only way out and solution to his problems; he hangs himself. His psychotic brother Sidney goes in search of the four gamblers to get revenge. He kills all four of them. Haley has no idea who the killer is and goes to Winant's widow to find out who the killer is. The showdown between Haley and Winant is only a matter of time...

Reasonable film in which a man is scammed during a poker game and then kills himself. A fairly average film noir with some clichéd characters. Although enough happens story-wise, it sometimes falls a bit (such as the two songs sung). A small 3.0 stars for this film with Charlton Heston in one of his first roles.

I associate Heston primarily with theatrical roles in grand films that used to be on TV on Sunday afternoons, played in an old-fashioned and theatrical manner, a bit like a parody of a Shakespearean actor. The best-known example is his most famous role, Ben-Hur. But he made other things too. Like his first commercial film. In Dark City, he plays an ex-WW2 soldier with a past who has fallen on hard times. Dieterle was a director from Germany who had made prestigious films, particularly in the 1930s. Biographies, for example, and sometimes literary adaptations. After the war, he ended up making less ambitious, cheaper films. The film is also very much a Hal B. Wallis film. The legend who had made Casablanca for Warner, among others, and had a great feel for what the audience wanted. Because he received too little appreciation at Warner (even though he had a lot of influence on his films), he went solo under the umbrella at Paramount. This film is from that era.
Dark City is one of the few Dieterle noirs and a fine film with plenty of atmosphere that looks beautiful. Scott gets a lot out of her somewhat underdeveloped role. Furthermore, it features a whole host of fine actors. And a good Heston, partly because the film makes use of his somewhat imposing looks. Also with Viveca Lindfors, a Swedish actress we saw earlier this month in Backfire. And Dean Jagger, a supporting actor who had just won an Oscar (for Best Supporting Actor, of course) for Twelve O'Clock High. A nice stroke of luck for Wallis.

Quite entertaining, but the many (unnecessary) songs really slow things down. Furthermore, a very simple story by noir standards, without plot twists and with little action.
