Chronicle of a Disappearance plot
After living in New York for many years, Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman returned to Israel for this film. There he uses his privileged position as half insider and half outsider to analyze the extent to which the Arab population of Israel is losing its national identity. Through his almost aimless wanderings we get to know his extensive circle of family and friends. The characters lead a marginal existence in an at times surreal reality. The director/protagonist moves between the roles of character and spectator, mediator and storyteller, just as the film moves between documentary, fiction, memory and the present.
