Fritz Lang was inspired by Emile Zola's "La Bête Humaine" and very well conveyed the immorality that runs through Zola's novella in what I feel is a well-executed, suspenseful film noir.

Beautiful setting, especially with beautiful train scenes and the acting is also not to be sneezed at. Glenn Ford has a hard time bringing real drama to his act. Broderick Crawford can do that and what about beautiful Gloria Graham, who incorrigibly takes on the role of femme fatale.

Good film in which a train driver falls in love with the wrong woman when he returns from the war. Although the characters are a bit predictable, they complement each other well together with the excellent plot. Quite exciting here and there and the casting also works well. Quite a bit of location work that gives this entertaining film-noir a raw edge.

Watched with some reservation because I think Jean Renoir's film adaptation is so very good. In any case, Renoir's version is darker and does not have to deal with limiting production code like this Hollywood version. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this psychodrama. Of course Fritz Lang knows how to tell a story and he has a top cast at his disposal. The star is undoubtedly Gloria Grahame as the inevitable femme fatale. I'm not a fan of all her movies but this is one of her best I've seen so far. But Glenn Ford and Broderick Crawford also do well within the love triangle. In the end, I find it strange that Gloria Grahame gets completely blamed at the end and Broderick Crawford apparently goes free with 2 murders on the resume. So did the Hays code make adultery worse than murder? From a contemporary point of view, this (for me at least) takes a cynical turn.
