Trilogia I: To Livadi pou Dakryzei plot
Eléni is the first part of an epic trilogy by Théo Angelopoulos, who wants to portray the last century through three stories, each representing a moment of great love. Eléni, after the name of the main character, is the first part of this poem that has the allure of an ancient Greek tragedy. The story begins when the Red Army invades Odessa in 1919, and ends with the Civil War of 1949. Alexis and Eléni meet when he rescues her from a fleeing mob. They become lovers and soon Eléni secretly gives birth to twins. When Alexis' father, Spyros, decides to marry Eléni, the couple, who had sworn their love for each other, flee to Greece. They settle in Thessaloniki, in a country that is trying to get back on its feet after the series of Balkan Wars and the First World War. Under the pressure of the crisis of the 1930s, Alexis leaves for the US in 1936, hoping to find more happiness there. Eléni finds himself alone in the face of the war, the occupation and the civil war...
