A teen film with historical value because it was one of the first to deal with a subject such as adolescent sexuality and the changes in the morality of youth in the USA. To me it seemed much more sixties than fifties, a bit of an advance on the sexual revolution that was to come (although that revolution actually started in the fifties). So it is certainly an interesting time capsule that shows how relationships were viewed in the USA in the momentum of the 1960s. Or at least how relationships are portrayed. I liked that the subject of sexuality is effectively addressed in college in one of the opening scenes. As a viewer, that immediately gives you context, even if it comes across as a telephone conversation. A bit of context that I missed, for example, in the 1984 remake (which therefore misses a bit as an overall picture). Furthermore, it is a cleverly developed film in which tragedy and (especially) comedy are connected, a bit like in real life. Good acting performances with a striking Dolores Hart. I really liked the tone of the film, as did the music, which consists of a mix of hip cool jazz and Connie Francis who can make her acting debut.
