The first half hour of this manga adaptation is interesting and especially unpredictable, but the following 90 minutes are a real test of the viewer's patience. In essence, the concept of Alive is very nicely conceived and the direction of Ryûhei Kitamura provides it all with enough visual splendor, but the film lacks energy, pace and ultimately direction. After a while, so many different ideas are mixed into the whole that it mainly gets bogged down in dullness and fatigue. The acting is also too inconspicuous and the final phase is even messy with a lot of very substandard computer effects, which makes it a mystery to me that it is drawn out for so long. Kitamura is undoubtedly talented, but would perhaps do better to focus on pure genre works that thrive on fun and less on a good story.
