Hmm no, I really expected more from a Troma film.

The first forty-five minutes feature only one murder, and it's also the coolest. It's just a bunch of boring people having uninteresting conversations about the disappearances. There are also no eccentric characters like those in many other Troma productions.

The gore effects are decent, but don't expect any major carnage or zombies. Zombies are anything but; they've been possessed by a demon. That doesn't make them any less annoying; it was just an hour and a half of watching a few kids playing in the sandbox. At least, that's what it looked like—completely unconvincing. It didn't get any better when they had to fall down from being hit. I've never seen anyone time things so poorly. The film generally leaves a dull impression.

Nice nice nice

As a Troma fan, I can also really appreciate these kinds of lesser works. Possessed child cannibals; a wonderfully twisted concept! Add a touch of gore and you have a masterpiece in Children At Play.

Unfortunately, the latter is rather inconsistent. The gore often gives way to a lot of nonsense...and that's not exactly Troma's strong suit. Anyway, I have to say I wasn't bothered by it much; the story is quite entertaining, and the few gory bits are worth it.

The finale is absolutely the coolest, what a gigantic carnage! How wrong can you get? In conclusion: Very nice work, but it had the potential to be more.
