La Mort en Ce Jardin plot

"Torrid!...Tantalizing!...Tempestuous!..."

The adventurer Shark arrives in a small Mexican village near a gold mine. He is arrested by the local police on suspicion of committing a bank robbery in a neighboring village. At the same time, a miners' strike (as a result of the state confiscating the gold mine) is crushed. During the strike riots, Shark escapes. Shark flees into the jungle with the prospector Castin, his deaf-mute daughter and a prostitute in love with Castin. Also with them is the hypocritical priest Lizardi, who brings out the worst in the rest of the group.

Why this is a somewhat forgotten Bunuel is a mystery to me. Maybe because this film only really bears his signature at times? Or because he has made at least a dozen films that are simply better? This is also a great adventure film that largely avoids the clichés of the genre.

It takes a while to get going, but from the moment the uprising starts to get out of hand (after about 20 minutes) it's a great film with great scenes. I really love those old-fashioned adventure films, especially when they're set in the jungle. The boat ride, the jungle strolls, the violent uprising, the multifaceted characters, the colorful camerawork, a number of scenes that are typically Bunuel (the snake, the Arc de Triomph), the strong acting, especially by Piccoli and Vanel, the strong ending and the madness of the jungle, make this a film that is more than worth it.

I continue to be amazed by the high quality of his films. What a hero. Again 4 big stars

A more straightforward film by Bunuel than the well-known classics, but certainly not one of his worst films.

Much of the film takes place on a gruesome trek through the jungle, easily outshining most other jungle adventures from the 1950s.

And for the attentive viewer: despite the fact that it is more mainstream work, there are indeed a number of strange scenes, and the characters and the ending are not what you would normally expect in a jungle action film.

I actually bought the DVD for "Un Chien Andalou" which is paired with this film in the Netherlands and I didn't really expect much from this "La Mort...", but it is definitely worth it.

Furthermore, the logic of pairing these two films by Bunuel escapes me, but it is an interesting purchase.

The twelfth Buñuel film I saw and yet, in my opinion, of a lesser calibre than the later films of this filmmaker, such as "Virdiana", "Tristana", "Le charme discret de la Bourgeoisie" and "Cet Obscur Objet du Désir".

Buñuel does provide several striking characters and situations in this adventure film, which has its best moments in the second part: the flight through the jungle.

Simone Signoret is perfect for such a role and perhaps a young Michel Piccoli plays the most inscrutable character
