When Earl Leofric refuses to marry a Norman woman against King Edward's wishes, he is arrested. While in prison, he meets Godiva, the sheriff's sister. At Godiva's urging, Leofric is willing to go to the king's court, but only after they are married together, which presents the king with a fait accompli. At court, Leofric discovers that King Edward is heavily influenced by Norman nobles, who are after the throne and successfully attempt to sow discord in the Anglo-Saxon ranks. When Leofric hesitates to do something about it, his wife Godiva starts organizing the resistance...
