Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey plot

"At the far ends of the earth she found a reason to live, and a cause to fight for."

High in the jungle of Rwanda, deep in the deep greenery, is a family of mountain gorillas. They relax and play in the filtered sunlight. A female squats near them, imitating their movements and pretending to chew leaves to be accepted by the dominant male. That woman is Dian Fossey, a primatologist with a very distinct approach to her subject. So special, that her imposing, charismatic appearance and her intransigence make her a target of the local poachers. The film tells the true story of Dian Fossey, her study of gorillas and her efforts to protect the endangered apes.

Beautiful film about a woman's true struggle against gorilla poachers in the jungle in the late 1960s. Entertainingly told and the film also has some poignant moments. Beautiful nature shots and the gorillas look believable (mix of the real animals and dolls). Sigourney Weaver carries the film, and even though her character does carry on a bit at the end, it's understandable.

It's actually through this movie that I got to know Dian Fossey's work. Although she sometimes came across as a bitch, I also have to admire her enormously for her perseverance to, among other things, oppose the hunt for gorillas as a hunting trophy. It's a shame it had to end this way. I once read that the gorillas in this movie are not real though. But you have to be an expert to see the difference anyway. Not so surprising because gorillas are not so easy to film let alone that you can train them. It in no way detracts from this beautiful film, with Fossey excellently played by Sigourney Weaver, who here proves how versatile she is as an actress.
