Now, I haven't read the comics that Baba Yaga is based on [Valentina by Guido Crepax, erotic cult comics] but as a cinematic experience I found it rather tame.

Baba Yaga, the mysterious lesbian witch, doesn't exude much mystique. Besides, the dub of her phonetic lip-sync didn't do her any favors.

Valentina, the central character, relies heavily on her staring close-ups. And there's a very interesting situation at the end.

You have a general idea of where evil comes from, yet the story does little (if any) to generate interest or curiosity about the origin or nature of evil.

Fortunately, the visuals make up for a lot. For a film based on an erotic comic, you'd expect it to be overloaded with nudity and lovemaking, but that's not the case.

In many cases, it seems justified. It's not the absurdity of Jess Franco or the eroticism of Tinto Brass.

It relies on the visual style and it has style enough.

The scene in which Valentina "makes love" to her lover is so stylish and original [at least, I've rarely seen them like that] that you could honestly call it courtship rather than sex.

A fine Italian pulp film. As you might expect, the plot is difficult to follow and of secondary importance. The stylistic aspects dominate. I expected the film to be exploitation, but it's more of an arthouse production: virtually no gore, much less nudity than expected... thankfully, that doesn't make it any less impressive. It's a wonderfully slow and dreamy film that keeps things relatively clean, except for one bizarrely racist scene. The inclusion of George Eastman (Anthropophagous) as a romantic is a bonus. In short: Not as erotic as expected and very tame, but stylish and original nonetheless.
