Aberdeen plot

Kaisa is a successful Scottish lawyer based in London. She snorts cocaine and has one-night stands with strangers. Her mother calls her from Aberdeen, pleading with her to fly to Norway to pick up her alcoholic father she hasn't seen in years. Reluctantly, Kaisa promises to go. The story is a cover: Mother is dying and wants to bring her ex and her daughter back together. The trip turns into a disaster: Dad is too drunk to fly and the hot-tempered Kaisa kicks them off the plane. They then go by boat and car, needing all too much help from the nice truck driver Clive.

Although there is a lot of bitterness involved in watching it, underneath this layer it is a cute and sweet film. The main characters all have their hearts in the right place. During the road trip that takes father and daughter from Oslo to Aberdeen, both try to rediscover the bond that once existed. A simple scene in which the father, a severe alcoholic, drinks water in a café really comes across strongly. I also thought this film had a very nice ending. Visually it is unfortunately not that special, but Lena Headey and Skarsgard were definitely worth seeing.

An attractive road movie with a good cast. The story may be a bit predictable, but on the other hand, there is enough going on to make this almost two-hour ride worth it.

3.0 *
