Cobra Woman is an adventure film set on a fictional island in the Pacific, and bears witness to a naive exoticism indebted to a time when the world still allowed for it. The story seems to have been written for twelve-year-olds, and judging from the commentary by Hervé Dumount included with the DVD, this type of film was effectively aimed primarily at a young audience. Which explains why the absurdities and silliness in the screenplay were not taken very seriously. Although screenwriter Richard Brooks apparently gave up after this production and joined the army (!).

The actors do their job as they should. For me it was a first introduction to Maria Montez who is apparently also called the Queen of Technicolor, well, she did shine indeed. Only I thought it was a pity that Lon Chaney's character could not speak, damn.

The lack of credibility does not contribute to the tension of the film, although there are quite a few (straightforward) complications. Fortunately, we as viewers are not tested for too long with a running time of 67 minutes. I probably enjoyed the scenes with the monkey Kokos the most

After Son of Dracula, this Cobra Woman was Robert Siodmak's second film for Universal, and his first in technicolor. Again, it was a 'mandatory job' that Siodmak accepted in order not to jeopardize his career opportunities.

Siodmak may be a household name in cinema, but don't let that fool you with this film. Some say this is a camp classic and that's not so bad, but it should be taken with a grain of salt.

This adventure film full of female beauty of course does not have much to offer in terms of credibility but it remains an amusing and quite entertaining film to have seen once, on a fictional island where the high priestess and her religious companion rule with cruel rituals full of sacrifice, to supposedly keep the volcano god satisfied, her missing sister (who has no knowledge of her origins) is kidnapped from another island with the intention of putting an end to the cruel tyranny of the high priestess.

The film obediently follows the path of simple action and a romance subplot, the chimpanzee provides a bit of a Tarzan vibe.

Of course, you shouldn't watch this film for credibility, but it is certainly entertaining.
