Nebel im August plot

Southern Germany, 1940. The half-orphaned Ernst Lossa is 13 years old and considered uneducated. The son of a traveling salesman is not stupid, but finds it very difficult to integrate into normal social structures, which means that he is sent out of the boarding schools every time. In order to teach the little tyrant a lesson, he is eventually sent to a psychiatric hospital, where many people with physical and mental disabilities reside. They are all under the control of Director Dr. Veit, who manages his facility like a prison. It soon becomes clear to Ernst that something is wrong here. Over and over again 'undesirable' patients die, which turns out to be a good thing for the National Socialists who rule Germany to protect their 'Aryan race'.

Shocking drama starring Sebastian Koch as Dr. Werner Veithausen who slowly but surely turns into a heartless monster. We all knew about these Nazi practices but that doesn't make it easy to witness these outrages...

The euthanasia program for the "bottom third" of German society is a lesser known chapter as far as I'm concerned, but one that certainly deserved a movie. Not a word is said about Jews, these crimes are committed here against the weak: the mentally handicapped, the sick, children... which makes it all the sadder. To keep it all going in an unobtrusive way, the patients were given barbiturates and low-nutrient soup . Although the film itself is certainly not disappointing, I didn't find the characters that strong and therefore it touched me less than I would have liked. It remained a rather passive view through Ernst's eyes for two hours. I really liked the ending.

Powerful and poignant film about Nazi practices during World War II, in particular the insanely inhuman idea of radically excluding the weak from society.

That this happens to children, not always based on life chances but also on personal feuds, is all the more horrific.

Based on true facts. The girl Nandl is a fictional character, the film says, and represents the entire community of children who suffered such misdeeds. The last image of the teased but hopeful child's face of the girl provides a beautiful, touching conclusion.
