Just as good as part 1.

A while ago I watched the first part of the Blade trilogy (I'll write a review of that later) and yesterday part 2. I can't really choose which one is better. Blade II has better action scenes but part I has a more gripping story. I then have to come to the conclusion that they are equally good, which doesn't happen often. But as I mentioned earlier, Blade II is an improvement in action and also visually. The Reapers are a good addition and you get to see the first one in the opening scene. The slomo scenes remain minimal and the action varies, from shoot outs to sword and hand-to-hand fights, with acrobatic jumps also regularly. Del Toro's input is therefore an improvement. However, there are no "horror" scenes, and the bites of the Reapers are not scary (but cool). So if you want that, you better look elsewhere. I also found the ending a bit disappointing. Not that it's bad, just technically solid, but it's less so compared to part 1. It went off for Blade quite easily and it was over quickly too. Including that Nyssa dies.

Snipes is otherwise good as Blade just like Perlman, Luke Goss could do better as a villain (I just found out it was him, didn't recognize him at all during the movie) Reedus as Scud was a strange addition to me. Why the hell Blade let him work for him I just couldn't get into, that he eventually belonged to the pact I still found surprising. You could see the twist that the vampires betrayed him after all. .

Small 3.5*

Reasonable.

Blade will not be my favorite franchise, but as a mindless active entertainment it can still go on. Guillermo del Toro has in any case proved to be the right man to deliver a decent sequel after the somewhat poor first part. He makes the film more stylish, but also more stylish. He may also have had a bit more budget, but at least it can be seen that it all looks a bit slicker.

Some tricky points remain, however. The characters are barely worth the effort - Blade itself is also quite boring. More important, however, is that they serve the action a bit, but the action direction also remains mediocre. I suspect that something goes wrong with the editing, a shortcoming that the first part also has. I don't get warm from quickly cut and carelessly pasted action scenes. Curious if that shortcoming has been rectified in part 3.
