Minimalist cinema unfortunately doesn't go well with a weird Matrix plot, it makes a movie clumsy and stupid. And that's the case here too...

Nice review.

It remains strange that this was a filler project for both directors. That limitations often stimulate creativity is of course nothing new, but this double project is a very nice example of that. Aragami is very basic, but thanks to Kitamura's tight direction it has become a very nice film.

There's not much to be gained in terms of plot, it's basically just one big build-up to a final battle. But Kitamura knows how to build up the tension perfectly, and despite the fact that the location itself doesn't offer all that many possibilities to make it a dynamic battle, the direction solves that skillfully.

Actors are competent (which is nice, since you're stuck with it for 80 minutes), the action is ultimately pretty cool and as a bonus you get a very cool cameo. It's not really great cinema, but it is very good genre cinema, especially considering all the restrictions

4.0* and an extensive review

Very nice, this film about the build-up to a final battle. Especially after the previous projects of director Ryûhei Kitamura this is again a small improvement, especially because it is less focused on ambition and more on pure entertainment. The characters are also well acted, but a bit too theatrically portrayed. Takao Osawa in particular is regularly guilty of overacting, which means that the build-up is not free of dead and boring moments. Fortunately, the patience of the viewer is rewarded and Kitamura pulls out all the stops with the finale. The rolling cameras and creative fighting techniques provide a lot of profit in Aragami, which I as a viewer can enjoy optimally. The previous 50 minutes are of lesser quality, but all in all it is at least a pleasant piece of entertainment.
