Now that I've seen the film in its entirety, I thought I'd write a correction to the above.

I remember that I was still very tired, and that's why I turned the film off halfway through. Today I tried it again, and I have to say that I liked it much better. The story is very nicely found, and nicely worked out. Typical Iwai, although he is often not at his most subtle here. Sometimes he goes a bit overboard in the music, but visually there are still some very beautiful shots.

Also the overacting is used a bit too often here. But in the end it all works out very well, and the sweet-hearted interior of the film manages to charm. Very beautiful and cute story of a woman who tries to process the death of her husband, brought in an original way.

A solid 3.5*

Nice psychological drama, which after an interesting beginning in the middle section (about the school experiences) sags a bit, to then end strongly. Too bad that the crux of the correspondence relationship is already revealed so early in the film. The opening scene in the snow is wonderfully beautiful.

I was intrigued by a beautiful wallpaper of the Japanese city of Otaru that was dropped on my desktop via Bing, which made me discover that this movie was filmed in this city. That was enough for me to discover this movie by Iwai.

I was not blown away by this film, which seemed rather sentimental and very vague to me. A bit of a strange storyline about a namesake. But it was brought in a particularly serene and authentic way. I enjoyed it, but was less enthusiastic than some of the others here.

Visually beautiful and the direction was also fine. That was enough to experience the film positively.
