Possibly outdated.
The film centers on Hackman and Burstyn's divorce, and while it might be hard to imagine now, in the early 1980s, it was still relatively rare for people to divorce after twenty years of marriage. Now, it's practically the most common thing in the world, and the film also tells a clear story about why that happens.
The family troubles are gently but sufficiently broached, but all the economic concerns remain comfortably out of the picture. And perhaps rightly so, but on the other hand, it's also part of the love/relationship/economic bond divide that always presents problems in practice. Perhaps the viewer assumed they would figure that out for themselves, and perhaps that was naive, because the film rather too complacently leaves the problem unsolved.
What remains is a truly beautiful performance by Hackman, who manages to give the situation all conceivable depth with his demeanor and non-verbal acting. Without much of his own input, he navigates the desires and demands of the women around him, playing the stereotypical man who seems primarily looking for less nagging and isn't entirely aware of matters like family, feelings, and the future. Or perhaps I'm projecting a bit more than the film actually intends to convey, let me tell you.
Anyway, I enjoyed it, albeit a rather simple viewing experience, but on the other hand, it's also a film that has truly stood the test of time. I can hardly imagine anyone under, say, 40 finding it interesting.
