Kätilö plot

"A midwife's forbidden love story... separated by war, joined by love at first sight."

The film is set against the backdrop of the 1944-1945 Lapland War, a conflict between Germany and Finland in the aftermath of World War II. Helena is a midwife nicknamed 'Wildeye'. She falls in love with the Finnish-German SS officer Johannes Angelhurst. While everyone has to contend with his or her past, burning love does not make the past disappear.

Finland is far away, and we don't really know much about the country's history here. The Lapland War is therefore not really known. Not that this film will bring a major change in that, because it is nothing more than the setting in that situation, the framing of a narrative in which scary people with German uniforms walk around as a background for the relational game between Kosonen and Tilkanen in the setting of a struggle with the obvious daily practice of war crimes there. But it is not very clear to me what exactly Kosonen is doing in the camp and why she is after Tilkanen.

Nevertheless, it is an entertaining film, the production values are excellent, and when the beautiful landscape of Lapland comes into view it is nice to watch pictures. Then it is not so bad that the how or why is not explained in detail.
