Paul Grahame is a little boy whose stingy mother Hester always complains about money even though they have it pretty well. He gets a strange-looking wooden hobbyhorse for Christmas and the handyman Bassett teaches him to act like a jockey. He then discovers that if he rides the hobbyhorse at a furious pace, he is able to pick the winning horses in real horse races. The family then begins to gamble heavily and earns gold. However, Paul has to drive faster and faster to make the predictions where he goes to the limit and sometimes falls unconscious. He wants to stop but his greedy mother persuades him to drive one more race.
