The biggest downside to this print is that they put Monica Bellucci forward as if she were playing a leading role, which isn't the case at all. As a fan of fantasy and fairy tales, I really enjoyed this film. It is easy to see where the Brothers Grimm might have got their inspiration when writing or reworking their fairy tales. Sometimes it is not clear which direction the director wants to take with the film, fantasy, horror, drama rather than comedy. It may be a bit of a mess that way, but I think this one succeeded. For me, it was mainly the many references to fairy tales that made it okay for me.

Exactly what you can expect from Terry Gilliam, crazy not a masterpiece but just fun. The cast is nice and believable, Peter Stormare plays his part very well and Lena Headey remains fun to watch. Visually I think it's very good, Terry always knows how to make large-looking films with a relatively small budget. Personally I think this one is less than his movies like Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Twelve Monkeys but definitely worth watching.

Bad.

Special infantile adventure film. Matt Damon and Heath Ledger make absolutely no sense, but the question arises whether it is their fault. The script is in fact a mess, to which even a seasoned and usually creative director like Terry Gilliam can hardly give his own twist. Some nice ideas are completely ignored by the countless wrong decisions. Disappointing.
