Wilbur tries again and again to take his own life, but so far he has not succeeded. His unique appeal, especially to women, his spunk and charm cannot hide the fact that he is weighed down by great pessimism. The disillusionment with Wilbur is so great that he seriously questions the meaning of his life on earth. In contrast to his older brother Harbor who is an unparalleled optimist and who has made ensuring happiness in Wilbur's life an important goal. The two eccentric brothers, in their late thirties, live in Glasgow where they have inherited a dilapidated bookshop, the only memory of their recently deceased father.
