A family acquires a plot of land on the shore of a fish-rich lake. Soon not only anglers are coming, but also a bunch of shady guys with a moving arcade. They want to buy the land, the family refuses and this leads to a fierce battle.

One of Elvis' best albums. Not good but decent. The soundtrack is beautiful and the farce somewhat entertaining.

A film adaptation of the book Pioneer, Go Home by Richard Powell. Powell was initially apprehensive when he heard that his book would become an Elvis movie. Afterwards he was satisfied with the result. It's a comedy but not overdone. Everyone plays it straight. So is Elvis. He does have a cool hillbilly accent, comes across as quite naive, but it's all done with a poker face. Nice!
The story has deep roots in American culture. It is about a family that wants to settle on land that has been appropriated by the government for other purposes. Throughout the film you feel the tension between government vs. the freedom of the individual. A field of tension that is also embedded in American culture (eg the controversy surrounding the right to possess weapons). But otherwise this is an unpretentious and entertaining film. And the songs - there aren't many - were fitted in well.
