Zaman plot

The Antwerp police inspector Zaman is on the trail of the wealthy entrepreneur Collas, who knows his way around town hall just as well as he knows the environment. In the environment, Collas's business is usually run by Kaplan, owner of a number of nightclubs and lover of Zaman's daughter. Zaman's job as a police officer weighs heavily on his family life and he is not the perfect husband or father. Zaman, who is married for the second time, is now also this time gradually estranged from his wife and he is also not loved by his daughter. The only thing that survives under the heavy pressure is the friendship with his younger colleague Frank. It becomes an unequal battle between the policeman equipped with few resources and his mighty prey.

After seeing Robbe De Hert's "Hollywood on the Scheldt," I was craving a Flemish film from before the Flemish Audiovisual Fund, crowdfunding, and other tax shelters.

I chose "Zaman," not a particularly old one. 37 years old, anyway.

A police story that explores the ins and outs of the police force, but pays at least as much attention to the private life of a man who is completely absorbed in his job, but at the same time sees his own family life being torn apart.

Not a pedestal for the policeman, nor for the family man, but a sketch of a man with dedication but also weaknesses.

Certainly a decent film for its time, which cannot be compared with the many police series with lots of action and suspense that were released to the audience at the time.

A good performance by Marc Janssen in the lead role, and also by Herbert Flack, and yet it's also good to see the now much older familiar faces at work in their "younger" years, albeit often in smaller roles: Mieke Bouve, Ann Petersen, Ann Nelissen, Marilou Mermans...

Chicago-on-the-Scheldt

Wonderful! That ending

Early 1980s Antwerp in Zaman is a bit like New York in 1970s films. A seedy city with shady bars, window prostitution, and all sorts of crime. Not that it's changed much in 2020... I've always seen the city as our Chicago. The character portrayal is more important than the crime story itself, but it's enjoyable. Janssen gives a strong performance as a seasoned cop with an estranged family and a new colleague (Flack). Tastes like a buddy movie... As mentioned, the crime story surrounding Collas doesn't amount to much; it's an opportunity to create a nighttime atmosphere. I also enjoyed this Belgian film again, which had completely faded from my memory and seems like a pilot for numerous Flemish police series.

A quiet but quite enjoyable nostalgic film about police and nightlife in Antwerp in the 1980s. It reflects on real life in certain circles back then, thankfully not in the American style with lots of (gun) violence, brawls, and screeching tires. I enjoyed it.
