Der Müde Tod plot

"Love is Stronger Than Death"

When a young woman realizes that her husband is being carried away by "Death", she desperately tries everything to bring him back. After a vision of lost souls marching into "Death" territory, she faints and is taken to a herbalist, where she ingests poison. When she is confronted by "Death", he shows her three burning candles, each representing a human life on the run from death. As soon as the candles go out, the person in question dies. If she is able to save one of these lives, he promises her that she will get her lover back.

I think Der Müde Tod is a beautiful film.

I find the central story told in the film very intriguing. Bernhard Goetzke as death has an enormous amount of charisma and Lil Dagove also plays a brilliant role.

Three episodes are told in the middle part of the film. The episodes are a bit inconsistent in quality. In fact, all three episodes tell more or less the same story in a different setting. The way the story is told in the third episode appealed to me the most. To be honest, I don't really like the first two episodes. What is especially impressive in the last episode are the special effects, very well done for a film from 1921. I especially like the moment when the wizard conjures up a kind of miniature mini army. About beautiful special effects speaking, what I also think was nicely done was the ghosts going through the wall at the beginning of the movie.

The final part of the film went largely as expected, but I still liked the last part of the film very much. I really like the shot at the end of the film in which death walks towards the horizon with his arms around the shoulders of the two lovers.

In addition to the good acting and the good special effects, I also want to express my appreciation for the sets. Because I also thought the decors were very nicely made. I also like the musical accompaniment during the film.

All in all, I think Der Müde Tod is a very nice film. It is a pity that the first two episodes of the middle part are somewhat mediocre. Fortunately, the rest of the film makes up for a lot.

4*

Most users here find the three historical episodes entertaining, but I still agree with my predecessor Woland : the first two stories are rather lame adventures, and the comic approach of the third story falls short. completely defeats the purpose when you realize that someone is trying to escape death here (not to mention that the humor is extremely bland and very burly). It is nice that that third story , despite the light tone and the associated expectation that the woman will finally be able to save her husband, does not end well, and that brings the viewer back to the beautiful and gloomy frame story . Setting, decors and atmosphere are all perfectly fine, the tricks are impressive and the character of Death is impressive and still intimidating, but the three too light-hearted "illustrations" prevent me from giving this film a really high rating. .

Fritz Lang and his wife Thea von Harbou loosely based themselves on a Hindu myth about a woman battling the god of death. It's a bit like the Orpheus myth, with sex swapping. They turned it into a frame story in which the same actors return in different roles and environments. Especially Lil Dagover, born in the Dutch East Indies, plays an impressive quadruple role.

They have made Death an allegorical figure who just does his job, with the slight reluctance of the average commuter. He walks dressed in black, sometimes against the light so that you only see his silhouette. The candles symbolize human life. When your flame goes out, you've had your time. That is the fatalistic message.

The three stories-within-the-story are each set in a different location. In the Middle Eastern city, perhaps Baghdad at the time of the caliphate, we see minarets, ogives and oriental ornaments. Venice has a bridge and palazzos. In China, there are pagodas and oriental robes. Large-scale outdoor scenes have many extras and elephants. Color filters are appropriately used: blue for darkness, yellow for sunrise, and red for fire. The special effects are fun: ghosts stepping through a wall, an army of mini-soldiers, a flying carpet...

If you hit the pause button now and then, you can take your time reading those graceful gothic intertitles. A stanza of a poem appears six times in a tight rhyme scheme. The words Frank and giaur are used as a term of abuse for a non-Muslim. This also includes the topical theme of religious tolerance. This dazzling adventure with fairytale and symbolic elements once again shows how high the artistic level was in the Weimar Republic.
