The second Wilder film I've seen (Stalag 17 was the first) and again pleasantly surprised.
It is sometimes quite a search to get the older films, luckily I had recorded them once, so at least I already had the highest rated Wilder film.
It soon became apparent that this is a real film noir. A (great) voice-over, a real femme fatale and all this filmed with a dark, brooding city in the background with truly beautiful camera images.
The acting is also great. The real star of the film is Edward G. Robinson, who only has a supporting role but blows everyone away in every scene.
Yet Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck are also very strong. The former comes out well as a shrewd insurance expert and Stanwyck takes a shot at the ultimate villain as a femme fatale.
What I also like about this film is that Wilder leaves a lot to the imagination of the viewer. For example, the murder in the car is not in the picture, but we see the face of his wife. The ending is also not completely closed in principle, but almost moving and you are really curious as a viewer how it went with Neff.
This is a movie that everyone should see. Don't be put off by the year, this can be appreciated by a very large audience, I'm sure.

For a noir, this has a fairly simple plot. That is to say, it is clear who wants what and why, I am talking less about the sometimes somewhat laborious murder plan itself. The film has 3 highlights for me. Firstly Billy Wilder, who always directs well and knows how to tell a haunting story here, even though you already know how it ends after 2 minutes. In addition, the film has a consistently high level, but it is always raised a little higher when Edward G. Robinson comes into the picture. Finally, in this film Stanwyck is one of the ultimate examples of the femme fatale or at least how I see a femme fatale. MacMurray is just decent, it certainly doesn't bring the quality down, but I just didn't like him as much as his 2 opponents.

After reviewing, I've come to like this movie even more and it has crept very high in my top list of Billy Wilder movies (and movies in general). Double Indemnity is very well put together, with fantastic lead roles and an even better supporting role from Edward G. Robinson. It's amazing how we see our main character doing the most terrible things, but we still sympathize with him; we want to see if they can get away with murder. This makes the film more and more exciting as Robinson's intelligent character gets closer and closer to the truth. It's also nice that while the film suggests love at first sight between our main characters, this doesn't seem to be the motivation for their actions at all. Neff wants to see if he can get away with it, while Phyllis remains a mystery. Love is actually hard to find. At least, on the screen. Because off-screen, I've fallen in love with Mr. Wilder even more.
