A film that's particularly captivating because of the strong acting. Paul Massie is excellent as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. I especially love his facial expressions at times. Christopher Lee also delivers another strong performance in this film.

The sets and costumes are also beautiful. Unfortunately, the suspense just doesn't come across. I felt a slight shiver down my spine once (during the reveal of Lee's body), but otherwise, this wasn't a particularly exciting film. Now, I have to admit, I've never found the Jeckyll/Hyde story particularly exciting, so that might just be a matter of taste. I think it's a fun film especially for Hammer fans.

This Hammer version of the familiar story takes a slightly different approach. Unlike the original, the villain is a handsome young man, and the good guy is a socially incompetent, self-absorbed slob. That's actually an interesting approach, based on the psychological premise that evil must be attractive and seductive.

The film failed at the box office. The American distributor deemed it morally irresponsible to release it in the US, and it didn't do much in the UK either. Nevertheless, I certainly don't consider it a bad film. Like many Hammer stablemates, it's set in the Victorian era, and that is vividly depicted here with the familiar production design. The iconic Christopher Lee is present, though not in the lead role, but as the corrupt and depraved friend of Jekyll/Hyde.

Director Terence Fisher wasn't exactly enthusiastic about making this film, partly because it lacked sympathetic characters. He has a point about that last point. On the other hand, I think the film also has a double layer. Jekyll/Hyde's wife and her lover can also be considered "depraved"—from a Victorian moral perspective—but they're just wearing a mask. Hypocrisy. While Hyde's "depravity" is a more expressive version of everyday "evil."

Not a real masterpiece, but there is still plenty to enjoy and with a well-maintained production, it is a pleasure to enjoy the Victorian era.
