This Hammer production has lost out over time to more illustrious productions like Dracula, The Frankensteins, and the Quatermasses of the past. And I can see why. The story never quite catches fire. Anton Diffring, as the man who cheats death, has the lead role but is also the villain. It's not that you sympathize with him, but as a viewer, you have to root for him. Christopher Lee is there as the good guy—he didn't yet have the status he would later achieve. He gives a good performance, but he's also a rather dull character. Then there's the lovely Hazel Court. Perhaps it's a significant detail that she was paid an extra £2,000 to do a topless scene—posing for sculptor Diffring. This scene was only shown in the film prints intended for the European (non-British) market. Today, however, that scene has been lost, unless it turns up again in some archive somewhere.

On the plus side, the sets, costumes, and props of the story, which is set in Paris at the end of the 19th century, are all in good order. The eye wants something special, and it gets it.
