Save the Last Dance plot

"The Only Person You Need To Be Is Yourself."

Sara grows up in a small town in Illinois. She is fond of ballet and dreams of one day studying at the famous Juilliard School. However, when her mother is killed in a traffic accident, Sara has to put aside her grand plans for the future and moves in with her father, Roy, a musician from Chicago, who left a wife and child years ago. Sara ends up in a multiracial and multicultural school environment that is totally unknown to her. At first she has a hard time coping with her mother's death. But soon she finds solace with the colored Chenille, a teenage mother and older sister of the beautiful and gifted dancer Derek, who introduces Sara to the hip-hop culture.

dance feel good.

Although it's not exactly a feel-good film in terms of set-up, the atmosphere that surrounds it does have that effect on me. Simple and straight forward, no surprises in the plot, no unnecessary complications that don't fit the concept. A bit moralizing, though, this 13-year-old MTV production - image of a different generation in the meantime. Clash between good and bad, white and black, suffer or make something of it. The whole thing is completely based on Julia Stiles, who is portrayed here somewhat as a role model by MTV. With an occasional reporter from Sean Patrick Thomas. Together a nice couple, nice chemistry between the two. The flashy montage during the more serious dance-action scenes does suggest that Julia had some trouble with the steps. Or if not, it does somewhat suggest that.

“That's okay, I'll dance in circles, probably around you.”

A nice movie. The story may contain some clichés, but at least an attempt is made to tell an interesting story. Sara (Julia Stiles) grew up with ballet and has to go to a new, predominantly black school where she comes into contact with hip-hop. She has an unprocessed trauma and falls in love with Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas). The film doesn't break new ground, but I still enjoyed it. The film has a certain atmosphere and style that I like and director Thomas Carter has a vision about what the film should look like and his tight direction shows that well. But the biggest plus are the actors. Stiles is excellent as a young woman who is suddenly dropped into a whole new world. But Thomas is also strong and together they have a good chemistry and their relationship is built up nicely. Kerry Washington is also good and Terry Kinney has a small role as Sara's father but does a great job. Save the Last Dance is not earth-shattering cinema, but as a coming of age drama/dance film it is sufficient.

Completely pointless evening with forced dance film doublebill and beer part 2:

This was nothing at all. Two completely charismatic leads, a One Tree Hill-esque "I solve my teenage problems by doing long monologues" screenplay and the drawl to 50s melodrama leaning towards cinematography (with an impossible interracial relationship to make it all like a third-rate Far From Heaven feel) help the film to doom. Soundtrack consists of some randomly collected hip-hop and the playing time is unbearably long.
