The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry plot

"From the Play that shocked Hollywood!"

The bachelor Harry Melville Quincey is the chief designer at a small-town cloth mill. He lives with his two selfish sisters: the glamorous and hypochondriac Lettie and the complaining widow Hester. Harry's deepening relationship with his new colleague Deborah Brown finally promises happiness, but is thwarted by a first passive, but then increasingly active, resistance from one of his sisters. Will Harry then resort to desperate measures?

Aside from Robert Siodmak's disappointing, routine direction, this is a thrilling, well-written and superbly acted melodrama... right up to the infamous last two minutes that are definitely among the worst closing minutes in movie history! The studio bosses forced the makers to change the ending and it is completely understandable that producer Joan Harrison (who frequently collaborated with Hitchcock) resigned. The story also shows quite a few similarities with Hitchcock's classic Suspicion (1941), of which Harrison wrote the screenplay. Without that last 'twist', this film is worth a star more, but things done don't change. Unless you call it quits after 75 minutes of course.

Laid back, familial, romantic in the initial phase, the film suddenly takes on a more serious form and turns into a real family drama with thriller accents as one likes to experience.
The last two minutes are indeed surprising and incomprehensible, unless the story is to show that Harry indeed lives on confused and bewildered, unable to separate reality from fantasy, just as his condemned sister, in her revenge, had predicted.
Rock solid acting performances, not least from Georges Sanders, a man of many roles.
