Ajax: Daar Hoorden Zij Engelen Zingen plot

Roel van Dalen interweaves three storylines in this film. He follows the first team during their dramatic centenary season 1999-2000 and makes clear how much Ajax is run behind the scenes as a company. At the same time, he takes a look at the youth department, where hopeful children learn from an early age how hard the road to the top is. Moreover, Van Dalen goes to the football school that Ajax has opened in Ghana, and where Ajax scouts are looking for new talents to take back to the polder.

Well put together and very interesting documentary, even though I have been an Ajax fan for years. Good alternations between the first team of Ajax with their problems, the very young team of Ajax and the achievements of the scouts in Ghana. 3.5*

No idolatry, no feathers in the ass of any trainer, coach or player who has supposedly done something legendary and no sentimental whining about the sport. In that respect, There They Heard Angels Sing was not that bad. A portrait about the tough world called professional football. As far as content is concerned, Van Dalen provides the right images and makes the whole interesting through the multiple lines in the story. With those laughable scouts in Ghana or that very annoying blond trainer from that youth team in front; annoyance and entertainment in one. The storyline around the club itself didn't do much for me.

In that respect, it is good to see that the content of the documentary is more than a simple promotional film for the football club. Lovers, haters and also people who have nothing to do with football can all enjoy this. It is all the more unfortunate that it is a boring affair in the audiovisual field. The camera work is anything but interesting and that very annoying music also gets boring quickly. It's a shame that a documentary that, against my expectations, is quite accessible in terms of content, doesn't get any further visually than such a silly promotional film.

2.5 stars.
