Nice film about a civil servant who is put in charge in a poor part of the Dutch East Indies. Based on a milestone in Dutch literature. Probably this movie is also a lot better to appreciate if you are familiar with this book (something I am not). The moments in which Max Havelaar tries to tackle the corrupt way of working are the best scenes. A bit too long, but the film does end pretty strong. Easily 3.0 stars.

I liked it a lot better than expected. Interesting story and many beautiful images. As a small country, we obviously don't have a large stock of top actors and huge budgets, and you always notice that in productions from these years. It is occasionally presented a bit theatrical, but in the end I thought Peter Faber came out quite well here. A Klaus Maria Brandauer would have fit in perfectly here... but then again, he doesn't speak Malay.

Multatuli's literary masterpiece comes to life impressively in Gerard Soeteman's screenplay, which was filmed in an exciting way by Fons Rademakers. Max Havelaar [Peter Faber] is a reliable, capable civil servant who, with his wife [Sacha Bulthuis] and daughter [Mello Nieuwenhuis], had already occupied several posts in the East Indies in the 1850s when he traveled to Java as replacement for Assistant Governor General Slotering [Joop Admiraal], whose mysterious death has been covered up by the authorities. But the Governor-General [Frans Vorstman] did not count on Havelaar's strong sense of justice. In doing so, Havelaar gradually gains respect from his 'subjects', but he is diametrically opposed to the local regent [Adendu Soeslaningrant], who exploits his position of power. A Dutch-Indonesian co-production with excellent location work and excellent playing by Faber in particular provides a sharp picture of the corrupt system and the unadulterated racism on the basis of which the Netherlands made itself immensely rich well into the 20th century.
