This film never becomes very exciting, although it can hardly be called boring. I think it's a clever story and especially the sets in the castle create the right mysterious and creepy atmosphere. At times the film also reminded me a bit of the story of Dr. Frankenstein thinking. Sometimes it takes some getting used to the fast dialogues.

I Vampiri is a kind of combination between Gothic horror and the later Giallo. It is set in the 1950s, but the castles are so atmospheric that it is still clearly Gothic. A mad professor kidnaps young women and uses their blood to keep an old countess alive...

The acting seemed very theatrical to me, and the dialogue was so fast that the subtitles were sometimes difficult to keep up with. But in itself it was not very disturbing.

This is the first Italian Horror film with sound. Mussolini had banned the genre in the 1940s. Mario Bava was responsible for the cinematography, so that was fine.

There were a number of scenes that were very reminiscent of Gialli - a kidnapper with black leather gloves - and also scenes that were reminiscent of Bava's later Black Sunday.

I Vampiri was an entertaining film by Riccardo Freda and Mario Bava. It's the first time I've really seen the mad professor motif outside of a Frankenstein movie. Thought it was funny. There is no real vampirism in the film, it seems more Faust-like. The plot was a bit messy, especially for such a short film. But all the atmospheric aspects make the film more than worth watching.

Not really a vampire film, but a crime giallo film with a gothic touch. eternal youth is central and there are countless (often medieval) stories on this subject. The film starts very strongly with the body found in the Seine. Afterwards I also thought that the film slumped a bit.

But the atmosphere and tension were always present. The beautiful decor of the castle does a lot to create the right mood for these types of mysteries. Despite the fact that there is a lot of dialogue, I found the film quite entertaining and engaging. In this detective film with a gothic horror edge, everyone has a role. Not for the first or last time, the police and a charismatic journalist work more side by side than with each other. Nice interplay between the two by the way.
