The Gathering plot

"Evil Souls Rule"

A freak accident in Glastonbury leads to the unearthing of an ancient mural. It shows the crucifixion in a very special way: instead of an image of Christ, the sinister faces of the onlookers can be seen. Those same figures seem to have appeared in many accidents and disasters over the past 2,000 years. Now these faces are spotted in the village, but only by Cassie, an American tourist recovering from a serious car accident. Is she hallucinating? Or are these sinister strangers the harbingers of another disaster?

It could have been a story by M. Night Shyamalan: an interesting premise and some surprising twists. Unfortunately, the execution leaves a lot to be desired on all levels. The fact that the film resembles a long drawn-out British TV episode from the 80s can't hurt in itself. After all, the sober setting contributes to the atmosphere and is a relief between all that bombastic cinema violence. What is disturbing is that the film gradually becomes less interesting. When the second story takes over, the most exciting is already gone, while this should be the other way around. The script is by Anthony Horowitz, a British writer of children's books, who has already written quite a bit for TV (Midsomer Murders, Poirot). But perhaps director Brian Gilbert has something to do with this as well. His lack of experience in this genre is, after all, very clear in certain scenes: the 'shocking moments' come across as very clumsy and seem to have been forced into the film. As if he wanted to make another movie, but was pushed to the thriller platform for commercial purposes.

Those who do have experience with spooky settings are lead actress Christina Ricci (The Addams Family, Sleepy Hollow). Just back from 'Ally McBeal' she first decides to do something small-scale and mysterious before starring in two bigger films, being Woody Allen cop 'Anything Else' and alongside Charlize Theron in 'Monster'. And it is certain that she will still make that choice.

Mediocre film about a young woman who is hit by a car and loses her memory. The characters are quite unbelievable. Partly because of this, it doesn't get exciting anywhere. Entertaining enough because you still want to see how the different storylines go together. Certainly not too long, but 3.0 stars is still too much for this film.

Moderate horror.

But it must be said, the premise was quite okay, as was the structure of the film. In the past I have devoured quite a few of Hororwitz's books and although it has been too long ago to recognize his style in this story, I thought otherwise it was well written.

But Gilbert is clearly not a gifted horror director and Ricci also fails quite badly here. The mystery is not explored enough, the timid moments of shock miss the point and it all feels very cheap.

With a better director, it could have been more. Now the film still holds the attention because of a nice start and the curiosity about the ending, but that's where it ends. Sorry, missed opportunity.

2.5*
