In his early period, Hitchcock already amused himself with cinematography and editing. In a close-up of a champagne glass, the image of a ballroom appears. There are match cuts, e.g. from a bed sheet to a tablecloth. When her jewelry box is stolen, only her lower limbs are shown. The best part is that a wobbly camera shows the experience of seasickness.

The main character is a rich girl who must choose between a rich man and a nice man. Champagne symbolizes a luxurious lifestyle. There follows a change of fortune, remarkably one year before the Wall Street Crash. The lead role is played by Betty Balfour, an alliterative actress and British celebrity of the silent era.

Hitchcock's visual inventions are the main reason to watch this nice, but not too high-quality comedy. Betty Balfour plays the spoiled millionaire's daughter who is outwitted by her father [Gordon Harker] when he tells her that he has squandered his fortune and that she will have to work for a living. Ferdinand von Alten plays the detective who keeps an eye on the girl during her adventures.

In his early years, Hitchcock practiced almost all genres. This is the chick flick or 'lady's film' from his oeuvre. Hitchcock himself considered this one of his least films that he had to finish under contractual pressure. I still found it a quite entertaining melodramatic case like there are more in the silent era. It is a lightweight that is lifted up by the high level of direction and camera work. The camera angles in which the champagne glass is incorporated, for example, the editing, the way Hitch films the jewel theft ... that is enjoyable. Nice total package.
