Nice story about a samurai, who lives a simple life and struggles with the traditional codes of conduct and with his feelings for a childhood friend. A fascinating film with an impressive cast, in which Hiroyuki Sanada in particular stands out in the title role.

Trivial fact: Rie Miyazawa (Tomoe) owes her first name to her Dutch father, whom she never knew.

A beautiful romantic drama of a lower-ranking samurai who has already been through a lot in his life and is once again trying to straighten his back. As a single father and a live-in demented mother, he has a very hard time. He no longer takes care of himself and has outstanding debts. The village community tries to help him by finding him a new wife.

Not a film where you should expect many flashy sword fights. Rather a modest drama about the family life of a scarred man, set in a clan community with samurai somewhere in the 19th century.

Entertaining and rippling, never really disturbing, but not exactly masterful either. Just very solid and certainly enjoyed it.

Many samurai movies have been made, but most revolve around a ronin (without a master). In The Twilight Samurai, we follow a samurai in the 19th century several years before the dawn of a new era. The beginning is reminiscent of Yasujirō Ozu's films. In terms of theme though, the film style is different.

The film has a warm color and goes deeper than ever into the samurai itself. What exactly that means and who is such a man with respect for traditions, responsibility for his family, justice and love for his loved ones. Iguchi Seibei seeks a balance to reconcile all those feelings and thus be able to live with himself. Trained to kill, but only kill when necessary.

It's a warm film (that's been dropped here a few times) that takes the time to create atmosphere, but takes you inside the mind of Seibei, the samurai. It's not a great movie, but it really shines in that simplicity. Kudos to the cinematography by the way. You wouldn't say this was made in 2002, and I mean that as a compliment!
