The destitute Dove is on his way from Texas to New Orleans to search for his girlfriend Hallie, who disappeared without a trace three years earlier. Along the way, he meets young Kitty. Kitty has run away from an educational institution. They go on together. Dove finds shelter and work with Teresina, who has a cafe and gas station on the outskirts of town. Through calls in the newspaper, Dove hopes to find out where his girlfriend Hallie is.
