The Nutty Professor plot

"Well, any scientist who makes a girl like this can't be all mad."

Julius Kelp is a hideous chemistry teacher without a social life. One day he discovers something fantastic! A compound potion that turns him into a completely different man, Buddy Love. Buddy is very successful and popular with the women, but also very arrogant. One of Kelp's students falls in love with Buddy. Nobody knows, of course, that Buddy is actually Professor Kelp. The only downside to the elixir is that it doesn't last long.

I'm not a fan of the remake at all, but I was still curious about the original. I wasn't that familiar with Jerry Lewis either, by the way.

I have to say, thankfully, this is a bit better, but it's not all that great. Lewis makes a rather funny professor at times, but I found him much less engaging and convincing as Buddy Love. The scene where he makes the principal walk up and down the desk 15 times before he can start singing is a prime example of a joke taken way too far. The first two times it's funny, but after that, it just becomes annoying.

The story itself is quite enjoyable, and Stella Stevens is a joy to watch, even providing a bit of humor with her constantly frowning expression. Overall, I found it all a bit lacking in conviction. I had no idea if I'd actually enjoy it. It's certainly better than the remake, but that doesn't automatically make it a good film.

Lewis in front of and behind the camera.

I'm probably the only one here who's never seen the Murphy remake. It doesn't seem that bad. I didn't know beforehand that Lewis also directed this film, apparently the (almost) beginning of a seriously long directing career for him.

The division is clear by now. Lewis as the professor is quite funny; in those moments, he can indulge in his trademark humor. Lewis as a playboy is much less enjoyable. A character that doesn't suit him and becomes a bit tiresome after a while. Stevens is also a bit of a dead end in this film, but that's part of her character.

The film is a bit too long and features a bit too much Alt-Lewis, but it also has enough funny scenes to keep the pace going for 107 minutes. A typical Jerry Lewis film: sometimes funny, just a bit too much not funny.

A classic comedy with Jerry Lewis at his best. Jerry Lewis as Julius Kelp, the character on whom Professor Frink from The Simpsons was based, is truly hilarious. Even when he transforms into the easygoing playboy Buddy Love, it's a laugh-out-loud laugh! I'd love to find this film on DVD or Blu-ray!
By the way, there's a funny mistake in this film. When Lewis is lying on his left side in the closet where the rugby player put him, he sees Stella Stevens from the wrong side, as if he were lying on his right side.

"I'm terribly sorry sir, are you hurt?"
"Well actually, if you would say that a man with an ulcer had a nail in his shoe and a splinter in his finger and was then struck by lightning... if you could say that that man was not hurt, then yes, you would say I'm not hurt!"
